Tuesday's forecast: Cold front to trigger showers in East

Doyle Rice
USA TODAY

A slow-moving cold front will trigger showers and storms across much of the East on Tuesday.

East: Showers and thunderstorms will pelt portions of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic on Tuesday. Some of the storms could reach severe levels in the Mid-Atlantic. Eastern parts of the Carolinas will see some heavy rain.

Central U.S.: Thunderstorms could lead to some flash floods in the central Plains. The northern Plains and upper Midwest will enjoy clear skies, low humidity and mild temperatures.

West: Other than a few showers and storms in the northern Rockies, most of the West will be clear, sunny and dry on Tuesday.

Weather history for Aug. 4: In 1961 in Washington, both Spokane (108 degrees) and Walla Walla (113 degrees) set all-time record high temperatures. In 1980, after 42 straight days of 100-degree temperatures, Dallas' high was "only" 95 degrees, ending the record streak.
