Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville rails against overturned goal, storms off

CHICAGO — Chicago Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville was not happy Tuesday night when a goal scored by forward Brandon Mashinter was overturned on a coach’s challenge for goalie interference.

Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville shows his displeasure of a disallowed goal during the first period at the United Center.

In the first period against the San Jose Sharks, Mashinter positioned himself on the doorstep of netminder Martin Jones and redirected a puck off his leg and into the net. It would've given Chicago a 1-0 lead. But the Sharks challenged the call for goaltender interference, claiming Chicago’s Dennis Rasmussen got in the way of Jones.

Upon review, the call on the ice was reversed and Quenneville was demonstrably upset behind the bench. His team went on to lose 2-0.

Fast-forward to the coach’s postgame press conference, where he spent all of about 30 seconds discussing the first question related to the call.

"It has gone to a different level" Quenneville said. "I don't know the rules anymore or something has changed. Because my understanding, (and I have) played a lot of hockey ... I think everybody has an interpretation of what's a good goal, what's a bad goal. But I can't believe it."

And then he was gone.

Chicago has had bad luck with coach’s challenges of late. Marian Hossa's goal was overturned against the Arizona Coyotes on Thursday and it drew so much ire from Quenneville he was assessed a bench minor by officials.

Tuesday was the first time the Blackhawks have lost at home since Jan. 27.
