Oscar nominees 'Carol,' and 'Danish Girl' up for GLAAD Media Awards

Oscar-nominated pictures Carol and The Danish Girl are among the more than 100 nominees for the GLAAD Media Awards, the annual ceremony to honor movies, TV, journalism and music deemed inclusive for LGBT people by the leading gay-rights media advocacy organization.

The 101 nominees in 20 English-language categories and 46 Spanish-language nominees in 11 categories were announced Wednesday in Los Angeles. The awards ceremony will be televised on Logo in a one-hour special in April 2016.

In the English-language categories, cable networks earned 27 nominations, broadcast networks garnered 18 nominations, and streaming services received seven nominations (compared to three last year), GLAAD said.

The nominees for outstanding film in wide release, besides Oscar contenders Carol and The Danish Girl, include Dope, Freeheld and Grandma.

The 10 outstanding TV drama nominees include Fox's Empire, ABC's Grey's Anatomy, How to Get Away with Murder  and Nashville, and BBC America's Orphan Black.

The 10 outstanding TV comedy series nominees include Fox's Brooklyn Nine-Nine, ABC's Modern Family , Netflix's Orange Is the New Black, Amazon Instant Video's Transparent, and PBS's Vicious.

Other nominees in various categories include ABC’s 20/20 for its Diane Sawyer interview with Caitlyn Jenner; Jenner's IAm Cait reality series on E!, TLC’s I Am Jazz, Essence Magazine, CBS' The Bold and The Beautiful, and HBO's Last Week Tonight with John Oliver for his show on transgender rights.

The five nominees for outstanding music artist include Miley Cyrus, Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz , and Adam Lambert, The Original High. Ricky Martin was nominated in a Spanish-language category for his new album A quien quiera escuchar.

“This year’s nominees have raised the bar for creating thoughtful and diverse LGBT images and storylines, deepening audiences’ understanding of LGBT people and accelerating acceptance across the world,” said Sarah Kate Eillis, president and CEO of GLAAD, in a prepared statement.
