Friday's forecast: Big storm for eastern U.S.

A potent winter storm will start to roar in the eastern U.S. on Friday while another storm rolls into the West Coast.

East: A winter storm on Friday will spread snow and ice from the Appalachians into the Mid-Atlantic states. Some of the heaviest snow is likely in Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia and Virginia on Friday while freezing rain hits the Carolinas. By the evening, the snow will move into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.

Farther south, rain and thunderstorms will hit the Southeast and Florida.

West: In the West, more coastal and valley rain and mountain snow will move into Washington, Oregon and northern California.

Central U.S. Most of the central U.S. will be clear and dry on Friday. Temperatures will range from the teens and 20s in the northern Plains to the 50s and 60s in the southern Plains.
