Acorn, possum, guitar: Weird things dropping on New Year's Eve

A live possum will be lowered in a box from a pole outside of a convenience store in North Carolina on New Year's Eve.

The iconic ball in Times Square, N.Y., isn't the only thing dropping on New Year's Eve.

Here's a look at the unique ways many states are ringing in 2016.

1. Brasstown, N.C.: You probably heard of Brasstown's Possum Drop during the frenzy questioning its morality and legality of using a live animal. Despite efforts by animal rights activists, the event is a go for New Year's Eve. Clay's Corner, a convenience store, provides an evening of music and entertainment leading up to the midnight lowering of the animal in question.

2. Memphis, Tenn.: The 8th annual Hard Rock Cafe Memphis Guitar Drop is happening. A 10-foot guitar will drop from 100 feet over Beale Street at midnight to usher in 2016.

3. Plymouth, Wis.: This year, the Plymouth Arts Center will drop a big hunk of cheese at 10 p.m., instead of 12 a.m., to make it more family friendly. The cheese is a metal 80-pound replica of a wedge, according to WBAY-TV.

4. Atlanta, Ga.: For the 27th annual peach drop, an 800-lb. peach will descend to bring in the New Year.

5. Raleigh, N.C.: A giant acorn is dropped at midnight to welcome 2016.

6. Mobile, Ala.: A 600-pound electric Moon Pie will be dropped in downtown Mobile, Ala.

7. Bethlehem, Penn.: Do yummy marshmallow Peeps excite you? Families come to see the Peeps Chick Drop, which involves a 4.5 foot tall, 85-pound lit Peeps Chick that drops at 5:15 p.m. on Dec. 31 to welcome the new year. The tradition celebrates the the real Peeps made at Just Born Inc. in Bethlehem.

8.Indianapolis, Ind.: Organizers are calling the Circle City event an "IndyCar descent," according to Bob Schultz of Downtown Indianapolis Inc. The race car, two-seater sponsored by IMS and Verizon IndyCar Series, will descend at 11:59 p.m. followed by fireworks.

9. Boise, Idaho: In downtown Boise, get ready for the annual potato drop at the Idaho State Capitol.

10. Flagstaff, Ariz.: A 6 ft. 70 lb. lighted, aluminum pine cone will be lowered from the Weatherford Hotel.

11.Las Cruces, N.M.:The Chile Drop happens in downtown Las Cruces. This year people are being encouraged to "think red" so perhaps the chile will be a fiery color. And the star of the evening will be solar-powered, according to Las Cruces Sun-News.

12.Temecula, Calif.: The annual grape drop includes a giant, lit bunch of grapes dropping from the city hall tower.

13. Kennett Square, Pa.: An 8 ft., 500-pound sparkling mushroom will drop in what's known as the "Mushroom Capital of the World" for the third year in a row.

14.Mount Olive, N.C. : Dil-lightful! A pickle will be lowered from a flagpole in downtown Mount Olive, N.C.. this year. People are asked to bring a canned food donation for the Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC.

15.Vincennes, Ind.: The annual watermelon drop will take place in downtown Vincennes.  The city's tradition pays tribute to Knox County's melon farms, according to the AP.

16. Port Clinton, Ohio: The small town drops a 20-foot, 600-pound fiberglass walleye fish at midnight.
