Arcade Fire singer awkwardly tries to make political statement after winning Celebrity All-Star Game MVP

Arcade Fire singer Win Butler, who played for Team Canada under Drake, was crowned MVP of the Celebrity All-Star Game. The Canada team beat Kevin Hart’s Team USA, 74-64.

While Butler was accepting the trophy, Sage Steele gave him a moment to say some words, as is customary. He says his thanks, but then goes into an attempt to make a political statement, and Steele has to cut him off.

Butler says:

“Thank you very much. I’ve lived in the great city of Montreal for 15 years. I’ve represented Montreal. If you guys want to fast-track my Canadian citizenship, hopefully this will help make me a permanent resident. I just want to say that I’m retiring as a celebrity right now, so I will not be eligible for the celebrity game next year. I’m retiring as a celebrity. We brought this home for Canada. Respect to Drake. Respect to Team Canada.”

Steele says congrats, and that Canada would probably welcome him back. He continues:

“Thank you. I just want to say, as an election year in the U.S., (NBA TV begins rolling the music — red flags) the U.S. has a lot that it can learn from Canada — health care, taking care of people…”

Right then, Steele quickly jumps in:

“We’re talking about celebrity stuff, not politics. Congratulations on your MVP.”
