Jim Harbaugh finds peace at Pebble Beach

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Jim Harbaugh leaves his intensity at the first tee.

Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh visits with fans above the seventh tee of the Pebble Beach Golf Links during the inaugural $1 million celebrity hole-in-one event of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am golf tournament.

Proudly sporting the University of Michigan logo on his hat and bright yellow golf shirt, and of course his Khaki pants, Harbaugh calmly joined the likes of Clint Eastwood, Justin Timberlake, Wayne Gretzky, Bill Murray and Mark Wahlberg for Wednesday’s celebrity Million Dollar Hole-in-One for Charity presented by Facebook at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

As part of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Harbaugh and 29 other celebrities and sports figures gathered at the iconic No. 7 hole at Pebble Beach, the short, glorious downhill par-3 that hugs Carmel Bay. Harbaugh, hitting 26th – his wife Sarah joked that the order was determined by popularity – barely missed the green 100 yards away with both of his attempts.

But instead of heaving his club over the cliffs and into the bay, Harbaugh, who was hootin’ and hollerin’ encouragement for the other celebrities, tipped his cap to the appreciative fans who warmly welcomed him when he was introduced and walked to his wife and said he had a blast.

And he high-fived Murray and Wahlberg and Ray Romano. Just another day for the man who went to the State of the Union, had a sleepover at a recruit’s house, helps pull a woman to safety after a car crash, tweets Judge Judy and meets with U.S. Supreme Court justices in their chambers and tries to turn Nebraska fan Clarence Thomas into a Michigan man, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The golf course, it turns out, is a place for the man who says Darth Vader is his guy to dial it down, relax and simply enjoy the day.

“I know I’m not good enough to get upset about this game,” said Harbaugh, who played a little golf as a kid and a little in college when his roommates were on the golf team. Now he’s lucky to play once a year. He’s playing in his third AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

“Why get mad out here? I’m not good enough. And this is one of God’s creations here. I’ll be around a lot of good people. And my wife is going to caddie,” Harbaugh said.

Doesn’t matter if Sarah Harbaugh doesn’t know a thing about golf.

Harbaugh’s professional partner is Matt Bettencourt and the two are paired with Jarrod Lyle and Huey Lewis. They start Thursday on Spyglass Hill, then play Monterey Peninsula’s Shore Course on Friday and Pebble Beach on Saturday. If Bettencourt and Harbaugh play well enough, they could play Sunday in the final round at Pebble Beach.

Harbaugh won’t completely leave football on the first tee.

“I actually am thinking about a few things. There are a few things percolating,” Harbaugh said. “But for the most part I forget about football when I’m out here. Too much too look at, too many shots to take.”
