Super Bowl ads tune to classic rock

Old-school rock is a recurring theme in this year's Super Bowl ads.

Seventies and Eighties rock tunes provide the soundtrack for many TV commercials during the broadcast of the big game, perhaps to catch the ear of baby boomers raised on classic rock or many millennials who love the music, too.

Here's some examples of how marketers will rock you Sunday:

Acura's new NSX supercar is seen rising from the primordial ooze amid the urgent cries and screams of David Lee Roth from Van Halen's Runnin' With the Devil, a song from the band's 1978 eponymous debut album. Some blistering guitar licks from Eddie Van Halen finish off the auto maker's ad.

Skittles candies has Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler coaching a candy-created doppleganger that samples Dream On, the group's hit from its own 1973 debut LP.

The late David Bowie's Starman, released in 1972, is featured in an Audi ad about a former astronaut attaining liftoff while driving the super-fast R8 coupe.

The driver of Honda's new Ridgeline truck apparently is hooked on Somebody to Love, a 1976 song from Queen. A herd of sheep belt out the song when no one is looking, suggesting they learned the lyrics from riding around in the back of the pickup, which has a new, built-in audio system for tailgate parties and nights under the stars.

Queen makes a second appearance in a Hyundai ad that stars Kevin Hart as a dad who gives the keys of his new Hyundai Genesis to his daughter’s date and then uses his smartwatch to track the car. The band's funky 1980 track Another One Bites the Dust sums up Hart's goal with the move.

Of course, using classic rock isn't new. Fleetwood Mac's Landslide played a major part in Budweiser's 2013's Super Bowl ad about the reuniting at a parade of a Clydesdale and its original caretaker.
