Blake Bortles threw the most wonderfully illegal touchdown pass

The NFL rulebook isn’t the most easy-to-understand thing in the world, but Rule 1, Section 8, Article 2 is pretty clear:

The offensive team may make one forward pass from behind the line during each down. If the ball, whether in player possession or loose, crosses the line of scrimmage, a forward pass is not permissible, regardless of whether the ball returns behind the line of scrimmage before the pass is thrown.

Easy to forget at times when you’ve got a bunch of things going on around you, but football’s essential rule seemed to slip Blake Bortles’ mind altogether during the Jags’ game against the Chargers on Sunday.

Bortles advanced a solid 10 yards from his pocket before throwing this pass to Allen Robinson — a good five yards or so ahead of the line of scrimmage. The touchdown was, of course, nullified, and the Jags kicked a field goal to make the score (at the time) 9-7.
