The president of Mauritania forced a soccer game to end with a shootout because he was bored

FC Tevragh-Zeina and ACS Ksar were all square at one-apiece in the 63rd minute of the Super Cup final on Tuesday, and according to Gazzetta World, Mauritanian president Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz – who was in attendance – grew bored and stopped the game to decide it with a penalty shootout.

Yeah. The head of state showed up to a soccer game, lost interest with a half hour left to play, and decided nah, I’ve got places to be. Y’all gotta wrap this up. Like, now. And had the juice to make it so.

Neither the players, nor the fans were happy with the decision, but the penalties happened anyway and Teveragh-Zeina came out victorious.

From Gazzetta World:

“The bizarre decision has sparked outrage throughout the country with thousands calling for an explanation, however, the league’s footballing federation has denied any claims of Abdel Aziz’s involvement, after an initial period of silence.

Federation president Ahmed Ould Abderrahmane said that “organizational issues in accordance with the presidents and the coaches of the two teams” were to blame for the game ending so abruptly.

Uh huh.

Listen, there’s no shame in it. In fact, I think President Obama should exercise that power the next time a Jaguars game goes to overtime. Or really, any AFC South game.

Maybe just disband the AFC South altogether. Just a thought.
