New documentary profiles Lenny Randle, 'the most interesting man in baseball'

A new documentary airing on MLB Network on Friday night profiles former MLB infielder Lenny Randle, deemed “the most interesting man in baseball” by Rolling Stone and “the Forrest Gump of baseball” by narrator Jim Breuer.

Fans familiar with 1980s ballpark blooper reels will recognize Randle as the Mariners third baseman who tried to blow foul a roller up the line. But there’s more to Randle’s story: By circumstance, he played in several historically odd ballgames, and by charisma, he made moderately successful forays into standup comedy and soul singing.

Randle finished his playing career in Nettuno, Italy, where he remains popular. He now works to revitalize the sport in Italy, where interest has dwindled since Randle’s playing days.

“Filming with Randle anywhere is an adventure, but more so in Italy,” said producer Andrew Brenner. “We couldn’t go anywhere without the locals recognizing him. Our shoots almost got delayed because as we would cross the streets, he would stop and hold court. He truly is an icon over there. It was an eye-opening experience to see that first-hand.”

The hour-long MLB Network Presents: Lenny Randle debuts at 9 p.m. ET on Friday.
