Marshawn Lynch has exited the NFL in a manner befitting his unique style.

The Seattle Seahawks running back, 29, is retiring from the NFL, his agent Doug Hendrickson told the Associated Press on Monday. Hendrickson also tweeted his congratulations to Lynch.

Lynch, who repeatedly shirked media attention in his nine-year NFL career, surprised many during the fourth quarter of Sunday's Super Bowl when he tweeted out a photo of cleats hanging up with a peace-sign emoji. The move came amid a report that Lynch planned on calling it quits.

Teammates were quick to voice their support on Twitter, with owner Paul Allen and the team's official account all but confirming the running back's intentions.

Lynch was a first-round pick by the Buffalo Bills in 2007, but he experienced a career rejuvenation when he was traded to the Seahawks in 2010. "Beast Mode" became a focal point of Seattle's offense, as he helped the team to a win in Super Bowl XLVIII and was named to five Pro Bowls.

But he was limited to just seven games this season and underwent surgery for an abdominal injury. For his career, he ranked second among active players in rushing touchdowns (74) and fifth in rushing yards (9,112)

Though Thomas Rawls appears ready to become the Seahawks' successor at running back, Lynch leaves a distinct legacy in Seattle. Despite delivering several signature on-field moments, including his "BeastQuake" run against the New Orleans Saints in the 2011 playoffs, Lynch was mostly known for his mercurial personality.

And now the running back who coined "I'm just here so I won't get fined" is apparently gone.
