Did the ACC officials get the ending of Miami-Duke right?

USA TODAY Sports
Miami's Corn Elder celebrates one of the greatest finishes in Hurricanes football history on Saturday night.

Mike Pereira, the former Vice President or Officiating for the NFL who now works as a Fox Sports analyst, has some questions and facts to share about the eight-lateral kickoff return that Miami used to beat No. 18 Duke on Saturday night.

The Hurricanes, six days after seeing their coach fired, capped one of the most remarkable kick returns in college football history with a touchdown by Corn Elder, whose two pass interference penalties had set up Duke's go-ahead touchdown seconds earlier. Elder's touchdown gave Miami a 30-27 win on the game's final play.

But before Miami was declared a winner, the game officials had to sort out a flag that was thrown on the Duke 25-yard line during the return.

Here's what Pereira had to say about the outcome — particularly the officials' decision, and decision-making process.

The first question was whether returner Mark Walton lateraled the ball before his knee was down while being tackled by a Duke defender near the Miami sideline.

"I'm going to just tell you like it is: I thought the guy was down. And I think pictures will prove me right, that he was down if you want to review it when he lateralled the ball," Duke coach David Cutcliffe said, according to the Associated Press.

Nearly 10 minutes after Elder became the last person to hold the ball and crossed the goal line, referee Jerry Magallanes announced two conclusions: Neither Walton nor any other Hurricanes returner had a knee down, and there had been no block in the back. No penalty, no win for Duke.

Here's how it went down in real time:

Expect a final explanation from the ACC on Sunday. It's certainly deserved.
