The unwritten rules of flag football according to a Philadelphia Eagles safety

With all of the impending games of flag football on Thanksgiving, For The Win went to some experts for the do’s and don’ts of the flag football field. Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins offers his thoughts below.

FTW: What’s an acceptable length of time to brag about winning the family flag football game?

Jenkins:  I think it would only be right if you bragged about your victory for a FULL calendar year!

FTW: How big should the playbook be and what’s a play that’s sure to work for a game-winner?

Jenkins:  The playbook shouldn’t be too elaborate because you need to be able to execute but it can’t be too small because then you become predictable. You have to have a few designed runs and passes … the rest of the time it’s a “get open” drill. Always have your ace in the hole trick play!

Mine is the reverse pass. Snap the ball pitch it to the running back like a sweep left, who then pitches it to a wide receiver going back to the right who then throws it back deep to the left to the quarterback who snuck undetected through the defense. Enjoy your victory!

FTW: Is it OK to have practice before the family flag football game?

Jenkins:  Failing to prepare is preparing to fail!

FTW: Is it OK to have a coach at the game and what should their role be?

Jenkins:  No coaches needed… The quarterback runs the show. Channel your inner Tom Brady as you run your offense.

FTW: How much trash talk is too much trash talk? End zone celebration?

Jenkins:  Rules for trash talk: 1. Don’t talk about anyone’s kids 2. Don’t talk about anyone’s cooking. All end zone celebrations should be thought out and choreographed.

FTW: Are there any other unwritten rules that should be followed?

Jenkins:  All is fair in love and war!
