Dempsey was sitting in the water waiting for a wave when she saw the shark appear underneath her.

“First I thought it was a dolphin and I thought, ‘What the hell is he doing?’ And he kind of landed on my board. Then I realized he had taken a chunk. And I was, like, that’s not what dolphins do….when I started swimming in and not knowing what was going on behind me in the water. I wasn’t thinking much, except, ‘[Expletive], I better get in!’”

The bite measured 13.5 inches wide, and the shark is estimated to be between seven and eight feet long. Officials closed a section of the beach for 72 hours following the attack.
