Amazon: Devices hit record sales over weekend

The number of things you could purchase on Amazon.com are seemingly endless, but holiday shoppers snatched up the company's own devices more than anything else on Black Friday, Amazon said Tuesday.

Customers bought more Amazon devices, such as the Amazon Fire tablet, than anything else on Amazon.com over the holiday weekend, the company said Tuesday.

The top-selling products on Amazon were the Fire tablet and the Fire TV stick. Amazon did not release specific sales figures, but said that sales of the Fire TV streaming device were up more than six times year-over-year through the weekend, while Fire tablet sales were up more than three times in the same period. Amazon Echo, a voice-activated device that can play music, answer questions and relay the weather report, among other things, was the top-seller among all products over $100.

Online sales were a boon to retailers over the long weekend, as early data show more people shopped online than in stores Thursday through Sunday. And though fewer people were expected to shop on Cyber Monday compared to last year, sales increased 17.8% over Cyber Monday 2014, according to IBM Watson Trend. Consumers primarily filled their virtual baskets with electronics — Samsung TVs, Apple Watch and Beats by Dre headphones were among the top products sold, IBM says.

Amazon shares were up $6.90, or 1%, to $671.70 in premarket trading.
