TV tonight: 'Flash,' 'Grinder,' 'iZombie'
The Flash
CW, 8 ET/PT
This entertaining superhero series returns with a reset episode after the death-dealing season finale. Chances are good that even the show's youngest viewers could do without the lessons-must-be-learned section teaching the values of teamwork, but once that's dispensed with, the show gets around to the business of efficiently setting its course for a new season.
The Grinder
Fox, 8:30 ET/PT
As The Grinder lets you know in a cleverly done meta-joke, second episodes are hard. The great news is that this Fox sitcom, the new season's most promising, hits all the right marks with an episode that introduces Dean (Rob Lowe) to the real world without diminishing his comic potential. You get two very funny running jokes, one built around Stewart's (Fred Savage) fear he's turning into a supporting character, the other around Dean's devotion to an argumentative catch phrase — and two personable stars who pull those jokes off with ease.
iZombie
CW, 9 ET/PT
A strong night for new and almost-new series ends with the return of iZombie, as Liv struggles with the consequences of last season's decisions. The pleasure here is that, underneath the zombie fantasy and the comic riffs about her brain-meal side effects, the emotional consequences — for her and for others — are given a chance to actually land.
