Watching 'DWTS' most memorable years requires A LOT of tissues

Erin Jensen
USA TODAY
It was an emotional night on 'DWTS.'

Last week'sDancing with the Stars episode was pretty hard to forget. Kim Zolciak Biermann and her partner, Tony Dovolani, were forced to withdraw from the competition. And Monday's episode was also one to remember.

The celebs performed routines inspired by their most memorable years, and here are some of the show's most memorable moments.

When Bindi Irwin danced for her dad

Some of the dances on Monday's show were very, very moving, but Bindi seemed to be the most emotional contestant of the night. The most memorable year for Bindi happens to be a year that most of us would like to forget: 2006, when we lost her father, The Crocodile Hunter. Bindi said this event shaped her more than any other event in her life, and she still finds it hard to come to grips with. "For the rest of my life, I'll kinda feel like he's gonna come home," she said.

Yep, we'll wait while you search for those tissues.

Julianne Hough called the contemporary routine choreographed by her bro and Bindi's partner, Derek Hough, "breathtaking."

And Tamar Braxton sealed her dance with a kiss

Tamar also had a tale that touched us. In 2012, while on a trip to NYC, Tamar learned that her husband, Vince, had multiple blood clots in his lungs. He was put in a medically induced coma, and he stayed in the hospital for 40 days. During that time, Vince and Tamar decided to have a child, and her own song, King, is an expression of gratitude for the two men in her life.

Tamar topped off her dance with partner Val Chmerkovskiy with a big smooch for her husband, which we gave a perfect 10.

When Nick Carter brought Backstreet Back

While Nick's package had tears, his performance was straight out of a high energy BSB concert. Nick's most memorable year came in 1992, when he met and became a part of the Backstreet Boys at just 12 years of age. And since he didn't come from picture-perfect parents, the Boys were essentially his family. Yes, there were interviews from ALL of his fellow BSBs. No, we're not mad that you just punctured our eardrums.

Nick danced a jazz with Sharna Burgess and 300 of his closest fan friends to Backstreet's Back. We were feelin' 13, but our drivers' licenses still said late twenties ... Bruno called the performance a "mega-sexy, megahit," and the other judges gave Nick high scores.

And Hayes Grier had the competition tripping over themselves

Hayes picked the year 2014 because that's when he became an overnight Vine celebrity. And he and his partner, Emma Slater, danced a contemporary to Stitches because when you are a social media sensation, Shawn Mendes is your best friend.

The judges thought Hayes totally broke out of his Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle shell. He totally left Julianne flabbergasted and asking, "What just happened?!?" A comeback, Julianne. A comeback!

When Carlos PenaVega found his Amazing Grace

Carlos and the newly-engaged Witney Carson took us to church this week and performed a waltz to Amazing Grace.

After coming off tour with Big Time Rush in 2012, Carlos was feeling really alone. He started smoking weed, but since "there's no hope with dope," Carlos started going to church. And he instantly felt like he belonged. A few days later, he went to a Bible study and met his wife, Alexa.

Julianne said that Carlos needed to work on his shoulders and opening up his chest, but Carrie Anne called the performance "mind blowing."

Carrie Ann: 9, Julianne: 8, Bruno: 8

And Alek Skarlatos really opened up

As you might've guessed, Alek's most memorable year was 2015, when he became an international hero. But Alek also has ties to another tragedy, the school shooting in Roseburg, Oregon. It turns out Alek attended Umpqua Community College and planned to continue studying there. Like so many of us, Alek was perplexed by the senseless tragedy. "Even the train made more sense than this does."

Alek dedicated his paso doble with Lindsay Arnold to his community.

When Andy Grammer talked about losing his mom

In 2009, Andy was a street performer shlepping his gear from gig to gig in his mom's van. One day, he got a call and found out that his mom had breast cancer. He had only a few days to say goodbye. We know! And we'll give you a minute to get it back together.

Andy and Allison Holker did a cha cha that wasn't completely well-received. In fact, Carrie Ann said it was awkward, but Julianne totally disagreed.

Carrie Ann: 7, Julianne: 8, Bruno: 8

On a happier note, Allison is now dancing for two. She and her hubby, tWitch, announced that they are expanding their family in the ballroom. Allison is four months pregnant.

Thankfully, the rest of the show required way fewer waterworks. Which is good. We were feeling parched.

Alexa PenaVega and Mark Ballas

When Alexa booked Spy Kids in 2000, her mother moved her whole family to Austin for filming. On Monday, Alexa danced a foxtrot to Mamma Said, a song that would often be blared over her family's speakers.

Carrie Ann Inaba was glad that Alexa and Mark finally infused theatricality into their dance.

Carrie Ann: 7, Julianne: 7, Bruno: 7

Gary Busey and Anna Trebunskaya

1979 was a good year for Gary. It's the year that he received an Oscar nod for his portrayal of the title character in The Buddy Holly Story. Gary also talked about another memorable year for him, 1988. That's the year he suffered a brain injury after being thrown from his motorcycle without wearing a helmet.

Gary picked up those black, thick-rimmed glasses one more time for a jazz with Anna.

Which wasn't as great as his Addams Family dance from last week. Bruno paid Gary a compliment, sort of. He said, "Your passion for the character made me almost forget your unique interpretation of the dance." Unfortunately, Carrie Ann hadn't seen enough improvement for being four weeks into the competition.

Carrie Ann: 5, Julianne: 6, Bruno: 5

Paula Deen and Louis Van Amstel

So, this week, Paula wasn't necessarily any butter. She and Louis did a cha cha, and her most memorable year was 1989. Apparently more happened that year than just Taylor Swift being born. Paula got out of her 27-year marriage and started her own business.

And even though she danced to Respect, she didn't get a whole lot of love from the judges. Bruno said that she made a step in the right direction, but Carrie Ann called her out for losing focus and forgetting some steps.

Carrie Ann: 6, Julianne: 6, Bruno: 6

And then there were nine

It was announced that Carlos and Witney and Gary and Anna were in jeopardy, and it turns out that Gary and Anna were eliminated. Or so we thought. Of course, Gar-bear didn't quite see it that way.

"The fact that I've been eliminated is false," he said. "Because my spirit with Anna, as a partnership, will remain in this room throughout the show."

Still, after Monday night, only nine couples remain. DWTS returns next week with the switch up when the partners will be swapped.
