Some welcome cooler weather will spread into the north-central U.S. while severe storms pelt the upper Midwest and Florida continues to see soaking rains.

Central U.S.: A wide spectrum of weather, both cool and hot temperatures along with severe storms, will visit the central U.S. on Tuesday. Pleasantly cool temperatures in the 60s and 70s will be a nice break from the heat in the northern Rockies and northern Plains. Severe weather is possible in the Upper Midwest, especially in Iowa.

Broiling heat well into the 90s and low 100s will scorch most of the central and southern Plains.

Florida: Ongoing showers and storms will continue Florida's soggy stretch of weather. Flash floods are possible.

Weather history for July 28: In 1930, Kentucky's all-time hottest temperature of 114 degrees was recorded in Greensburg. In 2013, 8.02 inches of rain fell in Philadelphia, leading to flash floods. That total set an all-time one-day rainfall record for the city.
