In the second-biggest mistake to appear in the runaway summer hit Straight Outta Compton, a biopic of the legendary rap group NWA, the group’s frontman Eazy-E is shown wearing a Chicago White Sox hat that didn’t debut until 1991, in time for Dr. Dre to wear it in the Nuthin But a G Thang video (below) but not in the film’s opening scene, which takes place in 1986 (above).
The famous, retro “Sox” logo, which eventually became a hip-hop staple, came out in 1990 and was officially installed as the team’s primary logo in 1991, where it has remained ever since.
The retro-looking logo, set to a black background, was indeed based off old logos, but that specific one had never been used before. It was based off official logos from 1912-17 and 1936-38 and, mainly, the team’s jersey logo from 1951-63 (below).
Oh, and the biggest mistake in Straight Outta Compton? Implying that MC Ren was a good rapper.
