Mini Clubman gets longer and wider but retains its split rear door

Mini has put a more maxi into the next Clubman,

The latest version of the Mini, unveiled Tuesday, grows more than a foot -- 12.4 inches -- over the model it replaces, It's 4.6 inches wider, as well.

That makes it 6.6 inches longer than the next biggest Mini, the Countryman.

The small crossover grows longer and wider and has separated from the brand's iconic Mini Cooper hardtop.

"The new Clubman strikes a perfect balance between Mini's heritage and future," says David Duncan, a vice president for Mini of the Americas, in a statement. "Its premium styling and functional design will play a critical role as we reposition the brand over the next few years."

The engine will be equipped with an inline turbocharged three-cylinder engine that puts out 134 horsepower. It has a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. The hotter Cooper S has a four-cylinder engine that produces 189 horsepower, with either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic.

The Clubman has room for five and rear seats that can be folded down for more space. The five-door crossover retains its split doors in the rear. A foot-activated sensor can open the rear doors.

The Mini will go on sale in early next year, with pricing to be announced in September.
