David DeCastro chosen by Team Irvin in Pro Bowl

The Pro Bowl has become something of a spectacle for the NFL. The league has gone to great lengths to try and make the game more interesting for fans, and palatable for players. What was once a badge of honor to be on the team has become a contract talking point, and significance of the honor continues to dwindle.

The Pittsburgh Steelers originally had three players voted to participate in the game. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger bowed out while he is recovering from a shoulder injury he suffered in the playoffs. Roethlisberger was able to play with the injury, but is not opting for rest and rehab in preparation for the 2016 season.

Wide receiver Antonio Brown was also selected after his record-setting season. Unfortunately, Brown suffered a concussion in the playoffs, and his season was cut off one game short. While most players don’t relish the experience of the Pro Bowl, I could see Brown embracing the experience and having fun with it.

So the only Steelers player left on the team is guard David DeCastro. He was selected by Team Irvin, led by former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin, and will start at right guard for the squad. It’s good to see DeCastro going out to represent the Steelers. After a season like this, it is good that they have at least one player healthy and motivated enough to make the trip to Hawaii.
