Broadway will get 'Frozen' in spring (2018)

The characters Elsa and Anna embrace in Disney's animated hit 'Frozen.' A stage adaptation of the musical is due on Broadway in 2018.

It’s official, Frozen fans: Elsa and Anna and friends are coming to Broadway in spring 2018.

Disney Theatrical Productions has announced, via Twitter, that its new stage musical based on the blockbuster film will arrive then. It will be directed by Alex Timbers (attached to the project in some reports last year), whose stage credits include Peter and the Starcatcher and Here Lies Love, with choreography by Peter Darling, known for Billy Elliott and Matilda The Musical.

As previously announced, music and lyrics are being provided by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, who scored the movie, with Frozen screenwriter and co-director Jennifer Lee writing the book.

The team for the new Frozen also includes a pair of multiple Tony Award winners with past Disney experience: set and costume designer Bob Crowley (Mary PoppinsAn American in Paris) and lighting designer Natasha Katz (Aladdin, An American in Paris).

A pre-Broadway Engagement will begin at Denver Center for the Performing Arts in August 2017.

In related news, ABC announced that it is planning a holiday special featuring "the whole Frozen cast of characters" and the voices who brought them to life on screen, including Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel and Josh Gad. Currently untitled, it will air during the 2017 holiday season.
