Peyton Manning and Budweiser: 5 facts to know

Jenny Green
The Indianapolis Star
Denver Broncos’ Peyton Manning spoke during a news conference after the NFL Super Bowl 50 football game against the Carolina Panthers, Sunday, Feb. 7, 2016, in Santa Clara, Calif.

Peyton Manning really likes Budweiser. He mentioned beer twice Sunday night shortly after winning his second Super Bowl.

When CBS reporter Tracy Wolfson asked whether he would retire Manning responded: “I’ll take some time to reflect. I’ve got a couple of priorities first. I want to go kiss my wife and my kids. I want to go hug my family.

"I’m going to drink a lot of Budweiser tonight, Tracy, I promise you that.”

Here are five things to know about Peyton Manning and Budweiser:

1. He wasn’t paid to mention the beer, according to Budweiser:

So says Lisa Weser, who identified as a spokesperson for Anheuser-Busch:

2. $3.2 million

That's how much Peyton Manning’s references to Budweiser are worth to the beer company in free advertising, according to Marketwatch.com, which cited Apex MB Analytics, a sponsorship analytics agency.

3. Manning owned shares of beer sellers

A couple of years ago, Manning owned shares in two Anheuser-Busch distributors in his native Louisiana, according to Beer Business Daily, an industry publication. It’s unclear whether he still has any ownership in them.

4. This wasn't his first Bud plug

After 2014 playoff win, Manning said in a news conference: “What’s weighing on my mind is how soon I can get a Bud Light in my mouth.”

5. NFL players aren’t supposed to endorse alcoholic products

That's according to league rules. The NFL has its own beer deal: Bud Light signed an agreement to continue sponsoring the NFL through the 2022 Super Bowl. The NFL will get $1.4 billion from Bud Light, Fortune.com reported when the deal was done in November. Retired athletes, of course, can endorse alcoholic products.
