Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's film 'By the Sea' will open AFI Fest.

By the Sea is edging into awards season.

On Thursday Variety reported that the film, starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt (and directed by Jolie) will hold its world premiere Nov. 5 as the opening-night film of the AFI Fest.

By the Sea follows an American writer named Roland (Pitt) and his wife, Vanessa (Jolie Pitt), who arrive in a tranquil and picturesque seaside resort in 1970s France, their marriage in apparent crisis. As they spend time with fellow travelers, including young newlyweds Lea (Mélanie Laurent) and François (Melvil Poupaud), and village locals Michel (Niels Arestrup) and Patrice (Richard Bohringer), the couple begins to come to terms with unresolved issues in their own lives.

"This is a story about a relationship derailed by loss, the tenacity of love, and the path to recovery and acceptance," says Jolie earlier this year.

AFI Fest takes place Nov. 5-12 in Los Angeles. It's a good place for this Sea to be: last year the festival premiered ultimate Oscar best-picture nominees Selma and American Sniper.

By the Sea will hit theaters on Nov. 13, almost a year after Jolie's last feature, Unbroken, was released.
