KBO manager's insane strategy nearly works

Last week in the KBO a manager raised eyebrows by trying to shift a fielder behind the catcher, but what Hanwha Eagles manager Kim Sung-keun did Sunday night makes that call look conservative by comparison. The Eagles loaded the bases against the Nexen Heroes in the bottom of the ninth, tied 6-6, with two outs on the board. With the game on the line, the manager sent pitcher Kwon Hyuk to the batter’s box for the first time all season.

The KBO uses designated hitters, so pitchers usually never have to hit. According to Kwon Hyuk’s batting stats on Baseball Reference, which go back to 2009, it was his first at-bat in at least seven seasons. To his credit, the pitcher got ahead 3-1 in the count and almost drew a walk-off walk.

Unsurprisingly, Nexen’s Son Seung-lak battled back and struck out the pitcher to extend the game.

Kwon Hyuk picked up the win in the 10th, after Hanwha loaded the bases again and won on a walk.
