Weekend TV: 'Black Sails,' 'Galavant'

Sophie McShera (second from left), who plays
Daisy on PBS’s Downton Abbey, makes a guest appearance on ABC's "Galavant."

Black Sails
Starz, Saturday, 9 ET/PT

This Treasure Island prequel kicks off a new, 10-episode run. If you have small children, keep in mind this is not a Disney view of Caribbean pirates: blood will be spilled.

Galavant
ABC, Sunday, 8 ET/PT

Well that was fast. Having just arrived at the beginning of the month, this medieval musical spoof from Dan Fogelman (Tangled) now vanishes with two final outings. And as a lovely parting gift, you're getting guest appearances from Rutger Hauer and Sophie McShera (who plays Daisy on PBS's Downton Abbey). The show may not have been everything that comedy or musical fans might have hoped, but producing a weekly musical comedy is an incredibly ambitious endeavor — and you can't really complain about a TV show that allowed you to hear some new Alan Menken songs every Sunday for a month.

Looking
HBO, Sunday, 10 ET/PT

A subscription service such as HBO doesn't need everyone to like everything — it just needs everyone to like something intensely enough to subscribe, whether they actually watch or not. Which is how you get a very specific show like Looking, which focuses on a tiny slice of gay life in present-day San Francisco. Though you could be excused tonight if you sometimes feel like you've wandered into Tales of the City San Francisco.
