It’s rare for a weekend of college football to pass without at least one field being rushed across the country, but that could change in the SEC after the league decided to raise the fines for schools significantly.

Commissioner Mike Slive announced at the annual SEC meetings this week that schools will be fined $50,000 for the first offense (the penalty used to be $5,000), and the fee will double to $100,000 for the second offense and jump to $250,000 for the third. The counter does not reset each season, so once a school reaches three offenses, it will pay $250k each time fans rush the field.

“This is designed to be a deterrent,” Slive said. “This is designed to try to change the culture about rushing the field, understanding that it’s viewed by some as a tradition. But it’s a tradition that runs into the question of health and safety of not only the fans themselves but the coaches and players.”
