American Idol winner Phillip Phillips wants out of his "oppressive, fatally conflicted" contracts with Idol producer 19 Entertainment, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

On Jan. 22, Phillips filed a petition with the California Labor Commissioner, alleging that Idol creator Simon Fuller's 19 Entertainment and its affiliated companies have "manipulated" him into taking jobs since he won Season 11 of the reality competition in May 2012.

The claim asserts that he was forced to perform for free promoting JetBlue because it benefited the 2013 Idol live tour (which he wasn't apart of), and that the title of his last album, Behind the Light, was withheld from him until it was announced publicly. It also charges that 19 Entertainment gets as much as a 40% cut when Phillips does endorsements, according to the Reporter.

In addition, he says that 19 Entertainment lined up a producer for his first two albums that "compromised his interests," and also lied to him, promising the producer wouldn't receive greater mechanical royalty rates on songs than he would.

While grateful for the opportunities to appear on Idol and to gain a fan base, "I have not felt that I have been free to conduct my career in a way that I am comfortable with," Phillips said in a statement. "I look forward to being able to make my own choices about my career and to being able to make great music and play it for my fans."
