Kickstarter o' the day: Help make a Lionel Richie sculpture

If you ask me, the clip for Lionel Richie's Hello stands as one of the weirdest and most unintentionally hilarious music videos ever made.

In it, an attractive blind woman makes a sculpture of Richie's head. Although the result doesn't really resemble the singer, he seems pretty pleased.

In celebration of Richie's 30th anniversary as a solo artist -- and inspired by the Hello video -- Barcelona art collective Hungry Castle has an idea: They want to build a massive sculpture of the singer's head and install it in his hometown of Tuskegee, Ala. The piece will even include a phone; when visitors pick it up, they'll hear Richie's Hello on the other end.

The guys are hoping to raise $30,000 to cover construction, transportation and installation of the project. Their video explaining the idea is one of the funniest things I've seen on Kickstarter, so I highly suggest you watch.

So far more than $7,000 has been raised, including a donation from Lionel Richie himself! Incentives include a "limited edition Vinyl Lionel head" and other wacky items.

This isn't the first time the Hello video has served as creative inspiration. A few years ago, several British artists attempted to make busts of Richie's head while blindfolded. The results were pretty funny -- and better than what we saw in the 1984 video:

The deadline to donate to the Kickstarter campaign is July 28.
