Brewers trade Carlos Gomez to the Astros

HOUSTON -- Well, apparently Carlos Gomez’s hips weren’t too bad.

The Houston Astros acquired Gomez and starter Mike Fiers from the Milwaukee Brewers a day after the New York Mets squashed their deal after looking at Gomez’s medical records.

“I don’t know why they report that,’’ Gomez said. “The only thing I tell you is I’m ready physically, mentally, to come to Houston and give everything we have and do something special.’’

The Mets agreed on Wednesday to a deal sending pitcher Zack Wheeler and infielder Wilmer Flores to Milwaukee for Gomez. Yet, the trade was nixed when the Mets reviewed the medical reports, believing Gomez had a degenerative hip condition.

“It’s very simple,’’ Mets GM Sandy Alderson said. “Our doctors felt the health risk was too great. Houston’s doctors apparently feel otherwise. That’s it.’’

The Astros had no problems with Gomez’s medical records, Astros GM Jeff Luhnow said, who opened trade talks two weeks ago with the Brewers.

“I know nothing what happened with the Mets,’’ Luhnow said. “We did our homework, as we do with every trade, and we’re very comfortable with the players we got.’’

The Brewers will receive four of their top minor-leaguers: Outfielders Brett Phillips (the Astros’ 2nd-best prospect) and Domingo Santana (7th-best); left-handed pitcher Josh Hader (14) and right-handed pitcher Adrian Houser (21).

The Brewers say they would not have done the trade without the inclusion of Phillips.

The Astros, who already are sitting atop the American League West, now have quickly fortified their team after acquiring starter Scott Kazmir of the Oakland A’s last week.

“This is what our fans want,’’ Luhnow said. “We have a chance to win this year. We have a chance to win next year. And we’re taking advantage of it.

“It means we’re serious about doing some damage this year, and for years to come.

“This is going to be a fun next year few years for the Astros, and hopefully this starts a long string of postseason appearances here.’’
