Caitlyn Jenner's latest chapter opened with a surprisingly modest turnout.

Despite an enormous publicity campaign that included a Diane Sawyer interview, a Vanity Fair cover and a lengthy appearance at the ESPY Awards, Jenner's new E! reality series I Am Cait opened Sunday with an underwhelming 2.7 million same-day viewers.

That's about the same total that Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Jenner's former TV home and still E!'s top series, earned last summer.

Delayed viewing will surely add significant viewership to Cait, but the immediate turnout is surprisingly low, given the huge media fuss over Caitlyn's story and the series, which hosted advance press screenings late last week.

Stewarts & Hamiltons, the Kardashians-style series led by Kimberly Stewart, premiered afterward with a low 938,000 viewers. New Cait episodes will air Sundays at 8 ET/PT on E!
