NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Richmond postponed

RICHMOND, Va. – NASCAR got all wet on a Saturday for the first time this year.

Persistent rain that began Saturday morning and stretched into the afternoon showed no signs of letting up, forcing NASCAR to postpone the Toyota Owners 400 Sprint Cup race at Richmond International Raceway.

It has been rescheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. Fox will broadcast the race.

Sunday's Richmond forecast calls for an 80 percent chance of light rain, mainly in the morning.

Although rain has been a threat often this season, the series has been able to get races in after delays.

Saturday's postponement is the first run beyond the scheduled race day this year. Last week's race at Bristol Motor Speedway was delayed but was completed late Sunday night, nearly nine hours after the scheduled green flag.

NASCAR modified the early part of its Sprint Cup schedule this season to give tracks a better shot at avoiding the possibility of cold and/or wet weather on race dates. Bristol's first-race date was moved from March to April, but the track still endured a day of rain Sunday before clearing skies finally allowed racing Sunday night.

Wet-weather forecasts also plagued Texas Motor Speedway two weeks ago, but the Duck Commander 500 was completed as scheduled.
