Dr. Dre attends the WSJ. Magazine 2014 Innovator Awards at MoMA in New York on Nov. 5, 2014. The rapper/producer announced a new album, 'Compton,' out Aug. 7.

It's not Detox, but at least it's something.

Dr. Dre will release a new album this week — his first since 1999's 2001, the rapper/producer announced on his Beats 1 radio show The Pharmacy Saturday.

Compton: A Soundtrack by Dr. Dre is out Friday exclusively on iTunes' Apple Music subscription streaming service. The new music is inspired by his work on music biopic Straight Outta Compton, out Aug. 14, which tracks his rise with Ice Cube and the late Eazy-E as part of rap group N.W.A.

"I felt myself being so inspired by the movie that I started to record an album," Dre said during the broadcast. "I kept it under wraps. The album is finished," and will feature guests including Cube, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem and Snoop Dogg. "It's going to be my grand finale," he continued. "The record is bananas."

For the past decade, Dre has teased the release of his long-awaited third album Detox, but revealed Saturday that he's since put the project to bed.

"I didn't like it. It wasn't good," he said on the radio show. "The record, it just wasn't good. I worked my (butt) off on it and I don't think I did a good enough job."

He's released two singles since 2001: Kush (with Snoop Dogg and Akon) and I Need a Doctor (with Eminem and Skylar Grey, which peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in March 2011). He also produced Eminem's 2009 album Relapse, as well as songs for 50 Cent, Alicia Keys and T.I.
