Ohio State will honor shooting victims in season opener at Virginia Tech

Ohio State will join Virginia Tech in wearing helmet stickers Monday night to honor two journalists, Alison Parker and Adam Ward, who were fatally shot last week while doing a live broadcast on Virginia television station WDBJ-7.

The Hokies announced Sunday they would be wearing the stickers, but the Buckeyes asked permission to wear them as well.

“Ohio State expressed a desire to show its solidarity with Virginia Tech in remembering the vibrant lives of Alison Parker and Adam Ward,” Virginia Tech athletics director Whit Babcock said. “Coach Beamer and I both agreed it was a wonderful gesture on the part of Gene Smith (Ohio State AD), Urban Meyer (head coach) and the Buckeyes. We hope fans of both teams join us in hopefully providing some solace to the friends, families and co-workers who continue to miss Alison and Adam.”

This is not the first time Ohio State has made a special tribute like this.

The stickers will include the No. 7 with maroon and teal ribbons plus the initials of the victims. Ward graduated from Virginia Tech in 2011, and Parker’s favorite color was teal.
