5 awesome MLB highlights to remind you that spring training is coming

With much of the country blanketed in snow and most of its attention focused on deflated footballs, now seems like as good a time as any to share some baseball highlights as a friendly reminder that spring training starts in less than a month.

Remember baseball? It’s awesome. Here are five awesome things that happened on baseball fields in 2014:

Mike Stanton hits a ball so, so far

Stanton’s April blast off Padres pitcher Eric Stults was not quite the longest or the hardest hit home run of the season, but it is easily the most majestic. Remember Mike Stanton hitting home runs? He’s going to hit more home runs soon!

Yoenis Cespedes throws a 300-foot strike

The then-Oakland outfielder botched a Mike Trout fly ball, then made up for his misplay by unleashing one of the craziest throws anyone has ever seen. In like three weeks, Cespedes will be throwing baseballs at Tigers camp in Lakeland, Fla.

Steven Souza saves Jordan Zimmermann’s no-hitter

The Nats’ underrated righty finished off the regular season with a no-hitter against the Marlins on Sept. 28. Outfielder Steven Souza — since traded to the Tampa Bay Rays — saved the effort with an incredible, over-the-shoulder diving catch in deep left-center field. Souza will get a shot at everyday play this year, and Zimmermann will remain part of an incredible Washington starting rotation in 2015.

Everything Mike Trout did

This whole post could have been Mike Trout highlights, since the Angels’ young outfielder is the best all-around player in the game. But let this September triple stand in for Trout’s entire MVP campaign. It shows him hitting the ball really hard and then running really fast, which are two of his main things. He’ll be doing both of them in some capacity in Arizona before the end of February.

Andrelton Simmons shows off his instincts

Simmons is the best defensive player in baseball, and the above video doesn’t even show off his ridiculous throwing arm. He’ll start practicing plays like this really soon. And then, sometime not long after that, he’ll be making them in games.

Baseball’s coming back, y’all!
