Cavs' J.R. Smith, Celtics' Kelly Olynyk suspended for Game 4 incidents

J.R. Smith will miss the first two game of the Cavaliers' next series.

The unwise play of J.R. Smith struck at the absolute worst time for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The NBA suspended Smith without pay for the first two games of the Eastern Conference semifinals after he wildly swung his right arm and made contact with Boston Celtics forward Jae Crowder's head during Game 4 on Sunday.

Just before the league made that announcement, Cleveland said forward Kevin Love will miss the entire conference semifinals series against either the Chicago Bulls or Milwaukee Bucks with a dislocated left shoulder he sustained in the first quarter of Game 4. The injury happened when Boston's Kelly Olynyk had Love's arm locked as they both tried to grab a rebound.

Olynyk was suspended one game for his part in the play, and Cleveland backup big man Kendrick Perkins was fined $15,000 and had his flagrant foul 1 upgraded to a flagrant foul 2 after he set an overly aggressive pick on Crowder.

With Love out, the Cavaliers could not afford to miss any more key players. Two seasons ago, in which Smith won Sixth Man of the Year, he was suspended for Game 4 against the Boston Celtics in the first round. The New York Knicks won the series in six games, but Smith wasn't the same effective player especially in the conference semifinals against the Indiana Pacers.

Smith was a key reason for Cleveland's turnaround this season after the Knicks traded him to the Cavaliers in early January. In 46 regular-season games with the Cavs, Smith averaged 12.7 points and 3.5 rebounds and shot 39% on three-pointers. He gave the Cavaliers a viable outside scoring option, and he played better defense than expected.
