Typical summertime warmth with a few scattered storms will be the main stories across the nation on the first day of July.

East: Rain is likely in New England and the Northeast while afternoon showers and storms impact the Tennessee Valley and Florida. The Southeast will continue to bake in heat and humidity.

Central U.S.: A few thunderstorms are likely in the northern and central Plains. The heaviest rain should be in Missouri, where some severe storms are also possible. The southern Plains will be hot, in the 90s and 100s.

West: Scattered afternoon thunderstorms are possible in the Rockies and Southwest. Temperatures will again rise over 100 degrees in interior portions of the West, in California, Nevada, Arizona and Oregon.

Weather history for July 1: In 1979, 5.8 inches of snow fell on Stampede Pass, Wash., a July record snowfall. In 1985, Yuma, Ariz., soared to a record high of 116 degrees.
