'Game of Thrones' videos get sound and packaging upgrades
Game of Thrones fans will have a chance to re-experience their favorite episodes in a new dimension: Dolby Atmos.
Dragons will literally sound as if they are flying over viewers' heads with the new sound technology, in the upcoming collectors sets of seasons 1-4 of the fantasy series that HBO Home Entertainment has in the works.
The recently-launched Dolby Atmos system for home theaters includes new audio/video receivers that drive speaker systems with upward-firing or in-ceiling speakers. This brings into homes the Dolby Atmos experience that began hitting theaters back in 2012. (The Blu-rays will work with whatever sound setup you have, but you won't get the overhead effects without Dolby Atmos.)
These new Game of Thrones Blu-ray Disc sets (suggested retail, $79.98) are the first TV in Blu-ray release. Seasons 1 and 2 will be available Nov. 3, with the subsequent seasons coming soon.
Each set will come in a Steelbook with new artwork from Elastic, the digital design and effects studio that creates the series' title sequence.
Season 1 packaging has a removable magnet that features the direwolf sigil of House Stark, while Season 2 sports the Lannisters' sigil.
