Podcast: Will live streaming apps kill paid TV sports?
VENICE BEACH, Calif. -- Last weekend's boxing match sold for $100 on pay-per-view, and many customers responded by holding up their phones and streaming the footage for free to the world via apps like Meerkat and Periscope.
Many sports and TV execs woke up the next morning wondering if their cash cow was doomed. What's the worth of paying for exclusive content if anyone can broadcast it themselves with two clicks on a smart phone?
We explored the topic on this week's Tech Roundtable podcast, talked about the growth in fitness trackers and review site Yelp's reported plans to sell for $3.5 billion or more. Who will buy?
We also met three on-demand apps for dry cleaning, dog walking and messenger services, Washio, Zingy and Schlep and Fetch. Click the link below to listen.
Our guests: Patrick O'Brien, the digital director for KTTV in Los Angeles, tech investor Eva Ho, Bryson Strauss, the co-founder of Schlep and Fetch, the on-demand messenger service, Jordan Metzner, the co-founder of Washio, the app that picks up your laundry for you and returns it the next day, and Tobi Skovron, the co-founder of Zingy, an on-demand dog walking service.
The Talking Tech Roundtable now airs live every Thursday at 8 p.m. ET. You can listen via USA TODAY's channel on Tunein.com, subscribe on iTunes or play back the archived shows on SoundCloud, and Stitcher.
