Schwarzenegger: 'As a husband, I failed'

Arnold Schwarzenegger arrives at the Los Angeles premiere of 'Terminator Genisys.'

LOS ANGELES — Arnold Schwarzenegger has spoken candidly again about his family life, saying he "failed" in his marriage to Maria Shriver.

The actor and former California governor was asked how he rated himself as a husband for an upcoming USA TODAY profile.

"Clearly, as a husband, I failed," says Schwarzenegger. "Not in everything, but in one area."

Schwarzenegger broke his silence last week on The Howard Stern Show about his split from Shriver after more than 25 years of marriage and four children (Katherine, 25; Christina, 23; Patrick, 21; and Christopher, 17). The couple separated in 2011 after revelations that he was the father of a child born to the family's former housekeeper, Mildred Baena.

The goal-oriented Schwarzenegger says he strives for the best in his family life: "When I do something, I always go all out. And I want to be a 10. Not that I am always a 10."

His role as a father remains solid, Schwarzenegger says.

"I want to make sure I pay as much attention as possible. I want the kids to know how much I love them, how great they are," he says. "I love being a father. I love trying to go all out and to be as good as possible.

"I just am very fortunate for my partnership with the kids and Maria and with everyone," Schwarzenegger says. "We have moved on. We have a great relationship, all of us."

After a few box office disappointments and personal turmoil, Schwarzenegger says he's in a good place.

"I was always a pretty happy camper," he says. "I'm happy with my career. And also that I'm able to get up when I fail. Losers stay down. Winners get up, dust themselves off and march on."

Terminator Genisys opens Wednesday.
