The 5 best things that happened when Jim Harbaugh came to Big Ten Media Days

CHICAGO — Jim Harbaugh made his much-anticipated appearance at Big Ten media days on Friday. He took the podium wearing a grey suit and a blue button down shirt, carrying a briefcase.

It was unknown whether he’d be shirtless, candid Harbaugh like he is on Twitter, talking about Judge Judy and Cracker Barrel, or low-key and subdued like he was with Colin Cowherd.

He was certainly the former, entertaining reporters with props and accidental—or perhaps purposeful—humor.

Here are the five best things that happened when Harbaugh came to his first Big Ten Media Days as Michigan’s coach:

1. Harbaugh doesn’t have a special name for Ohio State

It’s well known that no one at Ohio State says “Michigan.” Urban Meyer was asked about the rivalry multiple times Thursday and never uttered the word, always calling the Wolverines the “Team Up North.”

The first question for Harbaugh on Friday was if Michigan had a special code name for the Buckeyes. But he looked perplexed.

“No. Ohio State in particular? Just Ohio State,” he said. Then took a brief pause and looked around the room. “But great to see everybody this morning. Glad everybody could be here. Wonderful turnout.”

2. Harbaugh isn’t trying to be popular

Ever since Harbaugh was hired at Michigan, much of the focus in college football has been centered around this program. He’s caused that buzz himself with satellite camps and being active on Twitter, but says he’s not trying to attract attention.

Did he expect this?

“I don’t know. Not trying to be creating any buzz,” he said. “Just striving to coach the football team. Not trying to be popular or anything. Anyone who is popular is bound to be disliked. So just coaching football.”

3. He pulled a Mike Ditka jersey out of his briefcase

Harbaugh played for Ditka and the Bears in the late ’80s, early ’90s, so while in town for media days, they met for dinner Thursday night at Ditka’s restaurant where Harbaugh bought a Ditka jersey.

And of course he brought it for show and tell on Friday.

“No, he didn’t autograph it, but I’ll be proud to wear that,” Harbaugh said.

4. Had a back-and-forth with a reporter

Longtime Columbus Dispatch reporter Tim May asked Harbaugh what kinds of things he decided he wanted to change about the Michigan culture once he was hired.

Rather than answering the question, Harbaugh got into an entertaining discussion about the 1977 press tour. He asked May if he’d ever gone on the press caravan that bussed around to different schools. Then he excitedly asked the crowd if anyone had ever done that back in the day.

“Were you there when—I remember reading this—the caravan went to Columbus and reporters got out of the bus and they have chairs and sandwiches set up on the sideline for all the reporters,” Harbaugh said. “And if things weren’t going well in practice, coach (Woody) Hayes got upset and kicked everybody out of the practice. Threw a couple chairs. And all the reporters got onto their next destination a little bit earlier.

“I read about that. I would have loved to have been there.”

5. Cracked some jokes

Harbaugh is back coaching his alma mater, which holds a special significance to him and his family.

So how’s he feeling with a month before opening kickoff?

“As excited as I’ve ever been for the start of football season,” he said.

Why is that?

“I say that every year,” he said.
