More than 800 million now use WhatsApp monthly

LOS ANGELES -- The wildly popular free text app WhatsApp Messenger hit a new milestone this week: some 800 million monthly users.

WhatsApp now reaches 800 million monthly users

Jan Koum, co-founder of the app, which Facebook snapped up for $19 billion in 2014, announced the milestone on his Facebook page.

His most recent update, in January, had monthly users at 700 million.

At the time, he said WhatsApp members were sending out 30 billion messages every day.

The app is more popular in Europe than it is here, allowing smartphone users the ability to make free texts.

In the latest iTunes app download chart, the app is No. 1 in Germany, England, Spain and Italy this week, but No. 18 in the USA. The No. 1 app here is Facebook's Messenger app, which offers private communication via Facebook mobile.
