A soggy, hot Friday is on tap for much of the southern tier of the U.S. Friday while the Northwest bakes and the Northeast gets a break from the humidity.

South: Heat and humidity will continue to broil the South and Southeast Friday. Ongoing rain and thunderstorms are likely in Florida, the Carolinas and along the Gulf Coast.

Midwest, Northeast: Though still quite hot, as highs reach the upper 80s and low 90s in many spots, humidity will be much lower across these areas.

West: Very hot and dry weather is forecast in the Northwest on Friday as high temperatures skyrocket into the 100s in many locations. Some heavy rain is likely in the southern Rockies, the Desert Southwest and southern California, where flash floods are possible.

Weather history for July 31: In 1976, heavy rain led to the disastrous Big Thompson Flood near Estes Park, Colo., where more than 140 people died. In 1997, a devastating tornado killed 27 and injured over 200 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
