Ford recalls more than 440,000 cars

Ford's Flex is one of the vehicles being recalled.

Ford issued two big recalls Wednesday, one for power-steering problems on many of its recent-model sedans and crossovers, and the other to fix a heat-shielding issue on the new Ford Mustang.

The first recall involves 422,814 sedans and crossovers to fix faulty power steering that has resulted in four accidents, but no injuries.

The automaker says that there could be an electrical glitch in the steering gear that could result in loss of the electric power steering. If the power steering cuts out, the steering wheel is much harder to turn.

The recall covers certain 2011 to 2013 Ford Taurus sedans and Flex crossovers, and the Lincoln MKS and MKT. It also involves the 2011 and 2012 Ford Fusion, Lincoln MKZ and some 2011 Mercury Milans.

In a separate action, Ford is recalling 19,486 2015 Ford Mustangs to replace a heat shield around the gas tank on those equipped with the 2.3-liter engine.
