Iowa State is headed toward an agreement to hire Toledo coach Matt Campbell, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the negotiations are supposed to be private.

The person stressed the deal is not done, but that Campbell is by far the preferred choice. It is unclear whether a counteroffer by Toledo would make a difference.

Late Saturday, however, the Toledo Blade reported that the Campbell had agreed to a deal.

Iowa State athletics director Jamie Pollard has moved aggressively to pursue candidates and would like to get a deal done by the end of the weekend.

Iowa State's Paul Rhoads shares hugs, tears after final game

Toledo lost its regular season finale on Tuesday, which took the Rockets out of the Mid-American Conference championship picture.

Campbell, 35, is 35-15 in four seasons with the Rockets. If he becomes Iowa State's head coach, he will take one of the most difficult jobs in the Big 12. Paul Rhoads, the Cyclones' outgoing head coach, went 32-54 in seven seasons in Ames.
