Soap star David Canary dies

Veteran TV soap star David Canary, who won Daytime Emmys five times playing twins on All My Children, has died, his local newspaper reported. He was 77.

Canary, who played Adam and Stuart on Children, and also Steve on Another World, died Nov. 16 of natural causes, according to the Bulletin of Wilton, Conn., near his home.

A native of Indiana, brought up in Ohio, Canary followed a path similar to other actors of his generation, starting out in theater in New York before turning to film and TV roles.

He was in Hombre with Paul Newman, and appeared in recurring roles for years on shows such as Gunsmoke and Bonanza.

His first soap role of note was playing Mia Farrow's physical therapist, Russ Gehring, on the nighttime soap, Peyton Place, in the mid-1960s.

Starting in early 1980s, he became a fixture on Children for 26 years, during which he won five Outstanding Actor Awards and 16 nominations between 1985 and 2008. At the time of his fourth Emmy, in 1993, it was the most ever won by an individual actor.

He had mostly retired by 2010 but had a role in Curb Your Enthusiasm in 2011.

He is survived by his wife of more than three decades, Maureen, a son, Christopher, a daughter, Kathryn, a grandson, and a brother, John.

One of his famous soap co-stars, Kelly Ripa, who played his daughter, tweeted her sorrow.
