7 insane stats about Kentucky's dominant win over West Virginia

Care to rethink your quote, Daxter Miles, Jr.? After boasting that Kentucky would be 36-1 after Thursday night’s Sweet 16 game, Miles saw Kentucky move instead a robust 37- 0 after destroying his West Virginia team and setting a number of records in the process. A few of the best:

1. It’s the first time in Sweet 16 history a team doubled up its opponent.

Kentucky won 78-39. The double-up is a rarity in any type of college basketball game, but to do it in the Sweet 16 is wild? No team in this year’s tournament had accomplished the double up, including No. 1 seeds against the No. 16 seeds. In fact, the last time a top seed doubled-up a 16 seed was six years ago, when UConn defeated Chattanooga 103-47.

2. West Virginia’s 39 points were the fewest in the Sweet 16 since the adoption of the shot clock.

Coincidentally, it was a Kentucky team that held that defensive record before, when the ‘Cats defeated Miami (Ohio) 58-43 in a 1999 Sweet 16 game.

3. Overall, it’s the fewest points in the Sweet 16 since 1975, shot clock or not.

Let’s just say Dean Smith teams playing the four corners often scored more than 39 points.

4. No team in this year’s tournament had scored less than 40 points.

The previous low was San Diego State scoring only 49 points in a third-round loss to Duke. Last year, two teams scored worse than West Virginia, but both came in first-round games in a 1-16 and 2-15 matchup.

5. Daxter Miles, Jr., the freshman who boasted that Kentucky would lose, had zero points and one rebound.

There’s nothing else to say about that except, ouch … and leave the predictions to Joe Namath.

6. West Virginia’s leading scorer had the same amount of points as Kentucky’s leading scorer.

This is the best stat. It shows how deep Kentucky rolls. WVU was led by Juwan Staten’s 14 points. Kentucky’s high was from Trey Lyles, who also had 14. The Wildcats had three more players in double figures, however, while West Virginia’s next-best scorer clocked in with nine points.

7. Kentucky led by some ridiculous scores that are even more amusing than 78-39.

Even though 78-39 is an absurd blowout, it doesn’t have the hilarity factor of some other scores. Luckily, Kentucky had plenty of those during the game. At various points the Wildcats led 18-2, 30-9, 42-15, 54-19, 60-26 and 70-32. So, good for WVU for only getting outscored 8-7 at the end of the game. It’s the small victories, you know?.
