NASCAR broadcaster Steve Byrnes lost his battle with head and neck cancer at the age of 56 on Tuesday.
Byrnes was diagnosed with cancer in 2013 and was successfully treated, but stepped away from racing late last year after he suffered a recurrence of cancer. On Sunday, the NASCAR Sprint Cup series visited Bristol and ran the Food City 500 In Support Of Steve Byrnes And Stand Up To Cancer, which was renamed in Byrnes’ honor. Before the race, Fox aired a touching tribute to Byrnes featuring some of the sport’s biggest stars.
The Byrnes family received an outpouring of support from NASCAR drivers after the news broke.
