Song of the Week: Owen's 'Real Life'

Brian Mansfield
USA TODAY

Jake Owen, known for country hits like Barefoot Blue Jean Night and Beachin', goes away from the water for his new single, out Tuesday.

In Real Life, Owen raps the verses in his Florida drawl, describing a community where "the prom queen had a plastic crown" but where people tip the rude Waffle House waitress because they empathize with her problems, and keep listening to the bad bar band because, well, girls like to dance.

With its gratingly catchy sing-song hook, Real Life practically thumbs its nose at media culture, choosing instead to celebrate a life that "ain't all good," but at least it "ain't like what's on TV."

Penned by Ross Copperman, Ashley Gorley, Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne, Real LIfe is the first single from Owen's fifth studio album, due later this year.
